Inviting Artists to Use the Power of Art to Bring Healing to Our Communities

Artist: Leo Hartshorn, A.A., B.A., M.Div., D.Min. Leo grew up in the surf, Rock, hippie/psychedelic subcultures of Southern California. He started drawing as a child of the 50s boomer generation. As a youth he was influenced by Universal horror movies, Mad magazine, Salvador Dali, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and custom car culture. After high school in college Leo worked on an art major, hoping to go on to art school and become an illustrator. In 1973, instead of art school, Leo’s life took a turn as he went to a SoCal Bible College and on to a seminary in the Bay Area. For 40 years he pastored congregations in California, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. In 1987 he became an Anabaptist/Mennonite through the influence of Dr. James Wm. McClendon Jr., a baptist theologian at the Episcopal Divinity School in Berkeley, CA. Leo’s doctoral degree at Lancaster Theological Seminary (UCC) was on communal and dialogical preaching (published by Edwin Mellen Press). He taught credited courses, including homiletics, preaching peace, sacred drumming, polity, and supervised ministry students at Lancaster Theological Seminary and Eastern Mennonite University. Now retired, Leo has refocused his creative energies on art. A block of his artwork reflects his integration of art, spirituality and peace, as seen in this show. Other current artwork reflects his immersion in Lowbrow, Rock and Roll, Monster, and tiki subcultures. Currently Leo is Vice Chair of the Gresham Art Committee, has assisted and curated a. number of shows, and made a public presentation on Lowbrow art..
